PERU

Altitude - 1850

Variety - Bourbon

Location- Santa Rosa de Congona, Colasay

 

With 3 hectares of land and a mix of different varieties of coffee, Andy Llanos Delgado provides a unique quality of coffee passed on through his family. These mixes of coffees are coupled with the very cold and dry climate which produce a distinctive cup profile with a chamomile tea like quality. 1/3 of Andy’s hectares are used to grow Obata and in a smaller scale Bourbon, the type of coffee brought to you is grown. Andy and his family take care to pick up their coffee themselves to make sure the best crops are chosen, afterwards the coffee is fermented for around 36 hours before being washed, cleaned and placed on raised beds inside a drying tunnel. The producer’s curiosity and experimentation are what the industry needs exactly if coffee is to be sustainable.

There has been an effort to improve the supply chain because in past years the premiums that had been paid for quality rarely makes it directly back to producers, which is our principal goal here at 17g coffee which is a non-profit company that would like to support producer’s to encourage them to keep supplying us with the best quality possible.

ETHIOPIA

Altitude - 2100 -2300

Location - Raro Nensebo Kebele, Uraga Woreda, Guji

Owners- Multiple Small Holders

Variety - Gibirinna & Serto (74110 & 74112)

 

Wosasa is the name of a sub kebele in the Raro Nensebo kebele, a sub kebele is basically a village within a bigger municipality.

The lot takes the name of the village where the twenty-five farmers that contributed to this lot live with their families, all of them are growing Gibirrina/Serto variety (74110 & 74112). These are locally selected varieties with high disease-resistant qualities.

Farmers are growing their coffees under the shade of indigenous trees mainly rich loam soil, on average every producer owns 3.5 hectares of land around the Wosasa sub Bekele.

All of these farmers are trained in agronomy and post-harvest practices by the "King of Guji", Ture Waji.

What's unique about how these drying stations are managed, are the drying beds themselves: each day, each lot is tracked with a tag for each bed, listing the specific delivery and the start date of drying and relative Moisture Content Readings for each day.

COLOMBIA 

Altitude - 1600 - 2000

Location- Rio Sucio, Caldas

Variety - Castillo, Colombia, Caturra

This coffee producer is part of the Cooperativa de Cafiultores de Alto Occidente de Caldas which was established in 1964. The location where this coffee is grown until recently was heavily inhabited by the parliamentary groups (FARC, ELN) who looked to control central Colombia. The San Lorenzo indigenous group is based in the Rico Sucio municipality of Caldas where within 21 communities 1,150 farmers grow and produce coffee. The region in which this type of coffee grows isn't known for specialty coffee, but throughout the years more investments have been made in this specific region, access has improved and it is now possible to demonstrate the quality of the coffees available.

Indigenous inhabitants see the land as a living being. To them, it is their duty to protect the natural environment and have as little impact as possible from their farming of coffee and to leave it as it has always been. Each farmer owns approximately 0.5Ha of land in which they have about 2500 coffee trees. The harvest consists of the families working with their neighbours to select ripe cherries, afterward de-pulping in micro-beneficios where they will then de-pulp and ferment the coffee in water for 16-24 hours depending on the weather. After the harvesting, the coffee is then washed and then is set on small drying patios on the roof of the houses where they will dry it for between 8-14 days depending on the weather. They then deliver it to the Cooperative where it is assessed and categorised before being allowed to rest and then sent for shipment.
